Peripheral Nerve Tumors

Peripheral nerve tumors are abnormal growths that develop on the intricate network of nerves extending outside the brain and spinal cord. These tumors, which are most often benign—such as schwannomas and neurofibromas—can also rarely be malignant. Because they grow directly within or alongside the nerve fibers responsible for transmitting crucial sensory and motor signals, even non-cancerous growths can cause significant disruption. As these tumors expand, they can compress or infiltrate delicate neural pathways, leading to a progressive array of symptoms including localized pain, radiating tingling or numbness, and debilitating muscle weakness. Early and precise evaluation is vital to prevent irreversible nerve damage and preserve the essential functions of the affected limbs.

Our specialized practice brings a high level of microsurgical expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of complex peripheral nerve tumors. Utilizing advanced high-resolution imaging, such as targeted MRI and neurosonography, alongside detailed electrodiagnostic testing, we carefully map the tumor’s exact relationship to the functioning nerve bundles. When surgical intervention is indicated, our primary objective is the meticulous enucleation—or safe removal—of the tumor while painstakingly preserving the structural and functional integrity of the healthy nerve. We employ state-of-the-art operative microscopes and continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring to safely navigate this delicate anatomy, minimizing the risk of post-operative deficits.

The journey to recovery following the treatment of a peripheral nerve tumor requires a comprehensive and highly coordinated approach. We work closely with our patients well beyond the operating room, collaborating with specialized physical and occupational therapists to guide neurological rehabilitation and help restore lost strength and mobility. For patients with underlying conditions that predispose them to these tumors, such as neurofibromatosis, we provide long-term, multidisciplinary monitoring. Our dedicated team is committed to delivering compassionate, personalized support through every stage of the healing process, with the ultimate goal of alleviating pain, optimizing nerve recovery, and returning our patients to their daily lives with improved functional independence.
